EDEKA ZENTRALE Stiftung & Co. KG
EDEKA Group is Germany's largest cooperative food retailer, a federation of regional cooperatives that together operate more than 11,000 stores under the EDEKA, netto Marken-Discount and Marktkauf banners. It is organised as a co-operative of independent merchants rather than a shareholder company, buying centrally while letting members run their own stores. FY2025 revenue was €77.30 billion with roughly 417,500 employees.
Strengths: co-operative ownership keeps the merchant close to local customers, and the group funds its own brands and logistics centrally, which produces buying terms close to those of listed rivals without sacrificing local responsiveness. netto gives it a discount format to compete with Aldi and Lidl, while EDEKA's full-range stores defend the weekly shop. Regional federations also make it politically resilient across German states.
Weaknesses: the federation structure means decision-making is slow and formats vary by region, which hampers national campaigns and digital integration. German grocery is a low-margin business with aggressive discount competition, and EDEKA's profitability lags vertically integrated peers. Like other co-operatives it cannot raise equity and depends on members' retained profits for investment.閱讀更多收起
